چکیده

In this study, we characterized the rotational efficiency of the photo-driven Archimedes screw. The micron-sized Archimedes screws were fabricated using the two-photon polymerization technique. Free-floating screws trapped by optical tweezers align in the laser irradiation direction and rotate spontaneously. The influences of the screw pitch and the number of screw blades have been investigated in our previous studies. In this paper, the blade thickness and the central rod of the screw were further investigated. The experimental results indicate that the blade thickness contributes to rotational stability, but not to rotational speed, and that the central rod stabilizes the rotating screw but is not conducive to rotational speed. Finally, the effect of the numerical aperture (NA) of the optical tweezers was investigated through a demonstration. The NA is inversely proportional to the rotational speed. eywords: Archimedes screw; optical tweezers; two-photon polymerization; optical torque; micropump

Optically driven Archimedes micro-screws for micropump application.

Archimedes micro-screws have been fabricated by three-dimensional two-photon polymerization using a Nd:YAG Q-switched microchip laser at 532nm. Due to their small sizes they can be easily manipulated, and made to rotate using low power optical tweezers. Rotation rates up to 40 Hz are obtained with a laser power of 200 mW, i.e. 0.2 Hz/mW. A photo-driven micropump action in a microfluidic channel...

Carbon nanotube Archimedes screws.

Recently, nanomechanical devices composed of a long stationary inner carbon nanotube and a shorter, slowly rotating outer tube have been fabricated. In this paper, we study the possibility of using such devices as nanoscale transducers of motion into electricity. When the outer tube is chiral, we show that such devices act like quantum Archimedes screws, which utilize mechanical energy to pump ...

Laser-based fabrication of polymer micropump

Joohan Kim Xianfan Xu Purdue University School of Mechanical Engineering West Lafayette, Indiana 47907 E-mail: [email protected] Abstract. Diffuser micropumps are commonly fabricated using the standard lithography techniques with silicon as the base material. The important components of this type of micropumps are flow-directing diffusers and a moving diaphragm. Different diffuser designs show...

The Turn of the Screw: Optimal Design of an Archimedes Screw

The geometry of an Archimedes screw is governed by certain external parameters (its outer radius, length, and slope) and certain internal parameters (its inner radius, number of blades, and the pitch of the blades). The external parameters are usually determined by the location of the screw and how much water is to be lifted. The internal parameters, however, are free to be chosen to optimize t...

Low-cost Integrated Screw-based Micropumps for Thermoplastic Microfluidic Devices

A method for integrating on-chip displacement micropumps in thermoplastic microfluidic devices is presented. Stainless steel screws serve as direct displacement pumping elements integrated directly into threaded ports formed in a thermoplastic substrate, with a microcontroller used to precisely modulate flow rates over a wide range from 0.5 – 35 μL/min, in a compact and portable format. Combine...
